Laurierkwartier is more than just a place for living
Mayke Baltussen, landscape designer and project manager at Flux, has been interviewed by the firm Stek about Laurierkwartier: A fine green and sustainable place in the city, that’s Laurierkwartier nearby Leidsche Rijn Centrum. In the interview Mayke tells about the carefully chosen design and planting of the courtyard, which not only connects residents, but also makes a connection between birds, butterflies and other insects.
In collaboration with Mei architects and commissioned by DUWO, Flux will work on several courtyards and rooftop gardens in the upcoming period. This will be for two different building blocks in the Sluisbuurt Amsterdam, in which climate and biodiversity occupy centre stage in the design.
In the upcoming period, Flux is going to work on the spatial vision for the Zuiderpark in The Hague. The park characterizes itself by a distinctive history, a varied use and richness in atmospheres. In the future the park will become more important as the urban densification continues. Therefore the park needs a qualitative impulse, fitting its existing character.

In the category Conceptual- Analysis & Planning, the Edible Waddencoast has been selected; In the edible Waddencoast the landscape is the result of the dynamics and diversity of conditions. Building upon the variety of sweet and salt, wet and dry, high and low and clayey or sandy arises a broad spectrum of conditions that give room to both flora and fauna as the food-landscape.
Mayke Baltussen, landscape designer and projectleader at Flux, has given an interview about the project Leeuwenkuil in Rotterdam.
Between the Laan op Zuid and the Afrikaanderwijk in Rotterdam-South has been an empty lot for years. Flux landscape works together with XML, the municipality of Rotterdam, ROFFAA and Heijmans on the design for this place: De Kuil (the pit) derives it’s name from the function this climate adaptive courtyard has, the pit collects rainwater, re-uses it, and stores it within multiple levels of the plan. By designing the plan as a valley, we create different living conditions and make contact between ground level and the roof landscape. De Kuil is a nature inclusive plan in which the buildings and landscape are forming one ecosystem that fortify each other. Read more about De Kuil in the interview
In the past week the urban design research and sketch design for the demolition- and new construction site at the Thomas à Kempisweg in Utrecht, has been finished with a third participationmeeting.
Last year the team M3H architects and Flux landscape architecture have been chosen as design-team for this location, near the entrance of the ‘old city’. By demolishing the post-war housing, which is in poor condition, there will be space for ca 350 new homes.
Soon the team will start with the development of the landscape design and the architectonical design for the homes at this remarkable location in Utrecht.
Commissioned by housing corporations Portaal and Mirtos and in collaboration with the municipality of Utrecht.
