As part of the Holtland project, Flux has worked on the design research River Forests. A design research into opportunities for new riverine forests in the Netherlands, commissioned by WWF. Flux investigates the potential of new forests in the river landscape in this design research. Five new river forest types have been introduced by Flux. These forest types can, each in their own way, strengthen and improve the river landscape. The new river forest types mainly address the functioning of the river landscape as a system, in order to be able to contribute to it. The forests respond to specific conditions and challenges, such as new sponge forests, river basin forests, stream forests and fluvial forests. Commissioned by WWF and in collaboration with Alphons van Winden.
Since 2021 Flux has been working on Holtland, a design research into new forms of forest in the Netherlands. Flux sees a high level of abstraction and a lot of focus on surfaces in existing research on forests. Therefore Flux considers it valuable to further investigate the planting of forests in the Netherlands. The focus is on the diversity of forest types, a strong relationship with major current challenges in the Netherlands and a concrete spatial elaboration. The Holtland research consists of three parts: a forest book with forests of the future, four case studies and an alternative forest vision for the Netherlands. The project was financed by the Stimuleringsfonds and by co-financing from several parties.
The 4 case studies are set up with concrete locations and the stakeholders are the Province of Utrecht, WWF, Synchroon and Staatsbosbeheer. The advisory group for the design research consists of Berno Strootman (former National Landscape Advisor, involved in the forest strategy for LNV), Kees Hendriks (researcher forest Alterra Wageningen) and Martijn Boosten (researcher and advisor at the Probos foundation).
Flux and Ruimtevolk are working on landscape park Kromme IJssel
In cooperation with Ruimtevolk, Flux will develop a vision on landscape park Kromme IJssel. The area can be strengthened as a scenic connection between city and countryside. The project will also investigate the potential for food production, recreation, nature and new forms of housing. Flux and Ruimtevolk are working from a thorough analysis towards a number of scenarios and a perspective for the area.
Utrechts Heuvelland nominated for the WLA awards 2022
For the World Landscape Architecture Awards, Flux has been shortlisted in two categories. From over 240 entries worldwide, Flux has been selected for the Conceptual- Design category and the Conceptual- Analysis & Planning category.
In the category Conceptual- Analysis & Planning the plan Utrechts Heuvelland is nominated: a spatial future perspective developed for the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. There are national ambitions to strongly increase the amount forest in the Netherlands, but it is not yet clear where these forests can be realized and what they will look like. This design research investigates how new forests can be realized on and around the Heuvelrug and at the same time contribute to relieving the pressure on the Heuvelrug. The starting point of the spatial vision is to show how the planting of new forests or tree structures can contribute to the biggest challenges on the Heuvelrug.

Zuiderpark Den Haag nominated for the WLA awards 2022
For the World Landscape Architecture Awards, Flux has been shortlisted in two categories. From over 240 entries worldwide, Flux has been selected for the Conceptual- Design category and the Conceptual- Analysis & Planning category.
In the category Conceptual- Design the plan for the Zuiderpark in The Hague has been selected, for which Flux designed a spatial vision. The pressure on the park will increase considerably in the coming years as 10,000 homes will be built in the surrounding districts. At the same time, the importance of the park for climate adaptation and biodiversity is increasing. This calls for a review of the Zuiderpark. Flux has developed a vision in which meeting, climate, safety, health and quality of life are central.
Vision Zuiderpark is commissioned by the municipality of The Hague.

Design research Noordoostpolder
Flux is working on a design research for the Noordoostpolder. Flux investigates how the distinctive landscape structure of the polder can serve as a basis for future transitions. Flux in winter lecture of Arcam about Sluisbuurt
Gerwin de Vries of Flux gave a lecture in February for Arcam. The lecture was the fifth in the series of winter lectures about the Sluisbuurt. Together with Paul de Ruiter (Paul de Ruiter architects) Gerwin presented the icon of the neighborhood: Horizons. A residential building designed with the cycle of nature and the functioning of the human body as inspiration: it breathes, thinks and feels.
Flux receives assignment for green vision Amstelveen
Flux has been commissioned to develop a green vision for Amstelveen. In relation to the challenge of densification, urbanity in Amstelveen can be combined with high ambitions for sustainability, health, mobility, biodiversity and climate. Commissioned by the municipality of Amstelveen and in collaboration with Oak.
The Baak Amsterdam in progress
The design of Flux for De Baak in Amsterdam is in progress. The plan focuses on greenery, collectivity and views from all sides. By embedding De Baak in the landscape, the building will stand in the park. This reinforces the presence of the park and transforms the fragmentation into more unity. A logical whole is created that shows how buildings and park go together in the Westelijke Tuinsteden. Commissioned by Kondor Wessels and in collaboration with OZ Architects, De Wijde Blik, Pieters Bouwtechniek and Arcadis.
Commissioned by the municipality of The Hague, Flux has developed a vision for the Zuiderpark. Just as in the 1930s, the Zuiderpark is on the eve of major changes. In the coming years, 10.000 new homes will be built in the surrounding districts, which will increase the pressure on the park considerably. At the same time, the importance of the park for climate adaptation and biodiversity is also increasing. This requires a review of the Zuiderpark. Flux has developed a vision which encounters climate, safety, health and quality of life.
